Nitin Gadkari Biography: Nitin Jairam Gadkari born May 27, 1957) is an Indian politician from Maharashtra who currently serves as the Minister for Road Transport & Highways. He is also the longest-serving Minister for Road Transport and Highways, having served for more than eight years. From 2009 to 2013, Gadkari was the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Under his stewardship, a number of roads, highways, and flyovers were constructed throughout the state of Maharashtra during his tenure as minister of the Public Works Department.

Early years

Nitin Gadkari was born on 27 May 1957 into a Marathi Brahmin family in Nagpur, India to Jairam Gadkari and Bhanutai Gadkari. He worked for the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad during his teenage years. He earned a Master of Commerce and a Bachelor of Law from Nagpur University.

Political career

From 1995 to 1999, Nitin Gadkari served as the Minister of Public Works Department (PWD) for the Government of Maharashtra and completely restructured the department. He was the president of the Maharashtra branch of the BJP.

Gadkari firmly supported privatisation and advocated for private firms to invest in infrastructure. He spoke at a number of meetings between private investors, contractors, builders, and various trade organisations, and he redirected a substantial portion of budgeted projects towards privatisation. The state government subsequently allocated 7 billion for rural connectivity. Over the next four years, all-weather road connectivity was extended to 98 per cent of Maharashtra’s population. The goal of the initiative was to connect by road 13,736 remote villages that had remained unconnected since independence. It also helped alleviate malnutrition in the remote Melghat-Dharni region of the Amravati district, which previously lacked access to medical care, rations, and educational resources.

He was designated chairman of the National Rural Road Development Committee by the federal government. Gadkari submitted his report to the central government and presented it to Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the then-Prime Minister of India, following a series of meetings and studies. His new report was adopted, and Pradhan Mantri Gramme Sadak Yojana. A 600 billion rupee scheme to connect rural roads, was launched. Public Library Nashik awarded him the Late Madhavrao Limaye Award for Most Efficient Member of Parliament for 2020-21.

Personal Life

Nitin and Kanchan Gadkari have three children: Nikhil, Sarang, and Ketki. Nikhil, his eldest son, is married to Rutuja Pathak and Sarang Gadkari is married to Madhura Rodi. The Gadkari household is vegetarian

Controversies

Gadkari sparked controversy in August 2019 when he stated that he had advised the then-Union Finance Minister to fire the RBI Governor due to the latter’s inflexibility and stubbornness.

Yogita Thakre, age seven, was discovered deceased with bruises all over her body in a car parked near Nitin Gadkari’s residence in 2009. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Maharashtra attempted twice to conclude the case, but local courts refused. Employees of Mr Gadkari claimed that the girl inadvertently locked herself in the trunk and suffocated to death. However, the girl’s mother alleged that she was murdered. According to the autopsy report, Yogita was suffocated to death.
