Raghubar Das Biography: Raghubar Das, an Indian politician who served as the sixth Chief Minister of Jharkhand, was born on 3 May 1955. On December 28, 2014, he was sworn in as the sixth chief minister of Jharkhand. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has served twice as president of the Jharkhand BJP. He is the current National Vice President of the BJP.

Tata Steel employee, served as a member of the legislative assembly five times and represented Jamshedpur East from 1995 to 2019. He also served as the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Urban Development during the state’s BJP-led administration. During an internal crisis, he was placed behind cells. He is the first state chief minister to have served an entire term.

Early years

He was born on 3 May 1955 at TMH Hospital Jamshedpur to Chavan Ram, a steel company labourer. Das is a member of the Teli caste. He graduated from Bhalubasa Harijan High School and Jamshedpur Cooperative College with a Bachelor of Science. He studied law at the same university and obtained an LLB degree. After completing his education, he joined Tata Steel as an attorney. He is a former RSS employee.

Das has been politically active since his undergraduate years. He participated in the state’s Total Revolution movement commanded by Jayprakash Narayan. He was arrested and imprisoned in Gaya, and he was imprisoned again during Indira Gandhi’s Emergency Rule. In 1977, Das subsequently joined the Janata Party.

He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as one of its founding members. In 1980, he attended the first National Committee meeting of the BJP in Mumbai. He was named the commander of the Sitaramdera regiment in Jamshedpur. Later, he served as Jamshedpur’s city secretary and vice president, secretary of the BJP, and then as vice president.

From Jamshedpur East, he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1995. Five times, he won from the same electoral district. He was designated chief of the BJP in Jharkhand. In the 2005 elections for the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly, the BJP won 30 seats. In addition, he served as the Minister of Urban Development under the NDA government led by Arjun Munda in 2005. He also dominated the state’s 2009 Indian general election. From 30 December 2009 to 29 May 2010, he served as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state of Jharkhand, when Shibu Soren was the chief minister.

On August 16, 2014, he was also appointed vice president of the National Committee of the BJP. He has disclosed assets worth approximately Rs. 21 lacks.

In the December 2019 Jharkhand Legislative Assembly elections, the BJP under his leadership won only 25 of 81 assembly seats against the JMM alliance, forcing him to resign. Saryu Rai, a former BJP leader who ran as an independent candidate in the Jamshedpur east constituency, defeated him by more than 15,000 ballots.
