Early Life

Reema Lagoo (born Nayan Bhadbhade; 21 June 1958 – 18 May 2017) was an Indian actress renowned for her performance in Hindi and Marathi cinema. She began her acting career in the Marathi theatre and became a household name in the 1990s and early 2000s for portraying maternal roles. She became well-known for her roles in the 1990s classic sitcoms Shriman Shrimati (as Kokila Kulkarni) and Tu Tu Main Main as Devaki Verma opposite Supriya Pilgaonkar.

Career

Reema Lagoo was born Nayan Bhadbhade in 1958. Her mother was a well-known Marathi stage actress. As a pupil at the Huzurpaga HHCP High School in Pune, her acting abilities were recognised. Her professional acting career began shortly after she graduated high school. Her first roles were on the Marathi stage. At the end of the 1970s, she began appearing in Hindi and Marathi films. She tied the knot with the Marathi actor Vivek Lagoo. After getting married, she adopted the name Reema Lagoo. She has a Mumbai-based daughter named Sansui (Sanu) Lagoo. Lagoo has primarily played supporting roles; she has acted alongside some of the most recognisable personalities in the Hindi film industry.

In the 1988 film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, in which she portrayed Juhi Chawla’s mother, she soared to prominence after beginning her career in television serials. She then starred as Salman Khan’s mother in the 1989 blockbuster film Maine Pyar Kiya. She has starred in some of Bollywood’s greatest hits, including the 1994 family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!, 1995’s Rangeela, 1998’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and 2003’s Kal Ho Naa Ho. Lagoo has portrayed a dancer in Aakrosh (1980) and a cold businesswoman in Yeh Dillagi (1994), in addition to motherly roles. In Vaastav: The Reality (1999), she portrayed an underworld don’s (Sanjay Dutt) mother who murders her own son in a challenging performance. Lagoo has also appeared on the Marathi programme honouring Marathi personalities, Maanacha Muza. She is primarily recognised in Bollywood for portraying Salman Khan’s mother.

Personal Life

Reema Lagoo was born Nayan Bhadbhade on June 21, 1958. Her mother was the celebrated Marathi stage actress Mandakini Bhadbhade, known for her role in the play Lekure udand Jaahalee. As a pupil at the Huzurpaga HHCP High School in Pune, Lagoo’s acting abilities were recognised. After completing secondary school, she decided to pursue acting professionally. Beginning in 1979, she worked for the Union Bank of India in Bombay (now Mumbai) for ten years, during which time she appeared on television and in films and participated in interbank cultural events.

She met her future bank colleague and stage actor, Vivek Lagoo, in 1976 and married him in 1978. She adopted the name Reema Lagoo upon marriage. Described by Vivek as “an agreement to restructure our lives,” they eventually separated. Mrunmayee, the daughter of the couple, is also an actress and a theatre director.

Death

On May 17, 2017, Lagoo shot for the television series Naamkarann until 7 p.m. (IST). She was taken to the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai at 1:00 a.m. (IST) after she complained of chest pains later that evening. At 3:15 a.m. (IST), she perished from cardiac arrest. At the time of her demise, she was described as “healthy” and “in perfect condition.” Her funeral was conducted at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai by her daughter.
