Simmons moved to New York after graduating from college and held a variety of jobs during his early years there. During a few months, he worked in advertising and for the cosmetics companies Revlon and Coty Cosmetics. Simmons had unsuccessfully battled his obesity for several years. After the failure of medications and crash diets, he was determined to find a natural and healthy approach to weight loss. He devised a plan that included consuming healthy foods in reasonable portions and engaging in regular physical activity. This appears to be beneficial for him.

Early in the 1970s, Simmons relocated to Los Angeles. His first job was as a maître d’hôtel at a restaurant in Beverly Hills. He became very interested in exercise, but he was unable to find any gyms or facilities that could help him lose weight because the majority of gyms catered to the already healthy. He was determined to establish a fitness centre that would accommodate people of varying ages and weights and assist them in losing weight through healthy means.

In 1974, he founded The Anatomy Asylum, a fitness studio. After consulting with physicians and nutritionists, he designed a programme that emphasised moderate portions of healthy food and regular exercise. His facility was renowned for encouraging exercise in a fun and entertaining manner. Later, the company was renamed “Slimmons,” and Simmons continued to teach motivational classes and aerobics in Beverly Hills each week. Simmons stated in 2010 that he had maintained his own 100-pound weight loss for 42 years, that he had assisted others in losing weight for 35 years, and that he had assisted humanity in shedding approximately 12 million pounds over the span of his fitness career. Simmons has utilised the Internet for dissemination by hosting his own membership-based website and maintaining official profiles on several social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and YouTube. He has taught a course titled “Project Me” for close to four decades. Due to his innovative methods, his studio gained immense popularity. Due to his exercise routines, he rapidly gained media attention. While he was at work, he was featured on “Real People.” Over the course of four years, he portrayed himself on the wildly popular medical drama “General Hospital.” Additionally, he appeared on celebrity game programmes including “Body Language,” “Super Password,” and “Lose or Draw,” among others. Simmons presented “Slim Cookin” and the Emmy Award-winning talk show “The Richard Simmons Show” in the early 1980s, with both programmes focusing on personal health, fitness, exercise, and nutritious cuisine. “The Richard Simmons Show” was nominated for multiple Emmy awards and won four of them, including the Outstanding Talk or Service Series Daytime Emmy Award in 1982. Many of his more than 65 fitness films incorporate music, humour, and motivational concepts with exercise routines. More than twenty million copies of his videos have been sold worldwide. He is also the author of multiple publications, including “Never Say Diet,” which was a New York Times bestseller. In addition to fitness publications, he has also produced popular cookbooks. He portrayed himself in a number of television programmes, including “Whose Line Is It Anyway?,” “CHiPs,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” and “Bringing Up Buster” from Arrested Development. He hosted the short-lived television programme “DreamMaker” in 1999. In 2007, he starred in the PBS pledge campaign special “Love Yourself and Win”

Simmons is known for engaging in one-on-one conversations with studio visitors and product users. Among the methods he communicates with his supporters are letters, emails, and phone calls. As of 2008, he responded weekly to hundreds of emails and letters from individuals seeking his assistance. Simmons resides alone with three Dalmatians and two maids in Beverly Hills, California. Although his sexual orientation has been the subject of considerable debate, he has never disclosed it publicly.
