Tendulkar was born on April 24, 1973, at the Nirmal Nursing Home in Dadar, Bombay, to a Rajapur Saraswat Brahmin family. His father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a novelist and poet who wrote in the Marathi language, while his mother, Rajni, worked in the insurance industry. Tendulkar has three elder half-brothers and a half-sister: Nitin, Ajit, and Savita. He spent his formative years in Bandra (East)’s Sahitya Sahawas Cooperative Housing Society. As a child, Tendulkar was considered a bully and frequently initiated fights with new students.
In 1984, his older sibling Ajit introduced him to cricket in an effort to help him overcome his aggressive tendencies. Tendulkar did not perform well in their first encounter, but Ajit asked the coach to give him a second opportunity while he hid behind a tree. This time, Tendulkar, who was presumably unnoticed, performed significantly better and was accepted into Achrekar’s academy. Tendulkar’s aptitude impressed Achrekar, who advised him to transfer to the Sharadashram Vidyamandir School in Dadar. In late 1984, he made his debut as a cricketer for Sharadashram and was coached by Achrekar at Shivaji Park in the mornings and evenings.
He also participated in amateur cricket and attended Madras’ MRF Pace Foundation. In an exhibition encounter at Brabourne Stadium in Bombay in 1987, he was a substitute for Imran Khan’s team. Sunil Gavaskar presented Tendulkar with a pair of his own lightweight pads and encouraged him not to be disheartened by not receiving the Bombay Cricket Association’s Best Junior Cricketer Award. In 1988, he and Vinod Kambli batted in an unbroken 664-run partnership against St. Xavier’s High School for Lord Harris Shield. Until 2006, this was the largest partnership in any form of cricket.
Career
Sachin Tendulkar’s staggering statistics will remain a fantasy for many cricketers throughout their respective careers. So many of his accomplishments are still unmatched and are not likely to be surpassed for many years.
He was one of the youngest cricketers to make his debut in the history of international cricket. In November 1989, at the age of 16, he played his first Test, and he has never looked back. The man retired 24 years later in the same month in 2013, and the Wankhede Stadium was filled with emotions as every Indian listened to his farewell speech. Such was his influence on the current and previous generations.
Sachin Tendulkar always believed in communicating with the bat, and despite numerous controversies surrounding him, he always emerged from them as effortlessly as his straight drives.
After making his Test début in 1989, Sachin Tendulkar participated in an astounding 200 Test matches. The master blaster amassed 15921 runs in red-ball cricket with 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries for a total of 15921. His batting average of 53.78 remains the highest among players with such a lengthy career.
Sachin Tendulkar played a staggering 463 One-Day International matches during his career, scoring a record 18426 runs with 49 centuries. Tendulkar made it feasible for a team like South Africa to score 200 runs in a single inning back in 2010 when it was likely out of reach and unimaginable for everyone else. Throughout his ODI tenure, he averaged close to 45 and scored 96 half-centuries.
He is the only player in the history of international cricket to amass 100 centuries across all formats, and former India captain Virat Kohli is 26 centuries short of matching him. However, Sachin’s record of 49 ODI centuries is in jeopardy due to Kohli’s 46 tonnes in the format.
Though Sachin Tendulkar only played a single Twenty20 International for India and scored 10 runs, he went on to play in 96 T20 matches for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Even in the shortest format, he was consistent, scoring 2797 runs with an average of 32.90 and a strike-rate of 121.08, along with 1 century and 16 half-centuries.
