Saint Nicholas Birthday

Saint Nicholas, who was born on 15 March in the third century, is the patron saint of many individuals and churches in Europe due to his strong Christian faith and generosity. He was the only child of an affluent family and was born in the village of Patara in Asia Minor, or what is now the southern coast of Turkey. Nicholas was taught by his parents, who perished in an epidemic, to be a devout Christian. As a child, Nicholas was taken in by his uncle following the demise of his parents. Nicholas, in obedience to God’s command to assist those in need, used his entire inheritance from the death of his parents to aid the sick and the poor. He quickly gained a reputation for his generosity, affection for children, and strong Christian faith.

Nicholas traveled to Egypt and Palestine as a youth and became a bishop upon his return to Myra. Nicholas was exiled and imprisoned for five years by Diocletian, who was known for his ruthless execution of Christians, during the Roman Empire. Saint Nicholas was steadfast in his devotion despite being imprisoned and tortured. The religious leader was liberated from prison in 325 A.D. Following his release, he participated in the first Council of Nicaea, which sought to preserve the Christian faith and the unity of the church, both of which were threatened by non-Christians.

Before Nicholas’ death on 6 December 343 A.D., numerous legends surrounded his work. He was known for rescuing three young girls from being sold into prostitution by leaving a bag of gold coins at their window so that their father could pay a dowry, or marriage settlement, for each of his daughters. Another legend states that he prevented the execution of three innocent soldiers and resurrected three children whose bodies had been murdered by a butcher who intended to sell their cooked body parts as pigs.

After his demise, Nicholas’ remains were interred in the churchyard of his Cathedral. In 1087, Italian merchants unlawfully removed Nicholas’ remains from the church and transported them to Bari, Italy. His bones, or relics, have been acquired by numerous churches around the globe. Today, his demise is commemorated annually on December 6, also known as Saint Nicholas Day. On this day, children receive presents and tell stories and riddles about the enlightening Saint from the third century.
