Sharon Yvonne Stone was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, on March 10, 1958, to accountant Dorothy Lawson and former factory worker and tool and die manufacturer Joseph William Stone II. She has three brothers and sisters: Michael, Kelly, and Patrick. As a child, Stone was considered academically gifted and began second grade at age five. 1975 marked her graduation from Saegertown High School in Saegertown, Pennsylvania. She also participated in the Miss Pennsylvania pageant, where she was crowned Miss Crawford County. Stone moved to New Jersey in 1977 with her aunt to pursue a modelling career, signing with the Ford Modeling Agency a month later. She quickly moved to Europe and spent a year in Milan and Paris.
