Steve McMichael Career
Steve McMichael Biography: Michael began his football career with the Texas Longhorns as a defensive tackle. In his senior year, he was deemed an All-American and named the defensive MVP. He was honored with an induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010. The New England Patriots tried to recruit Steve in 1980, but they passed him up. In 1981, he joined the Chicago Bears as a free agent and became one of their starting defensive tackles, helping them win the 1985 Super Bowl.
Until his playing time decreased in 1990, Steve had a remarkable streak of 101 consecutive matches won. He excelled on the field, leading the Bears in pressures in 1988 with 11.5 and in tackles in 1989 with 108. McMichael was selected to the NFC’s Pro Bowl teams in both 1986 and 1987, demonstrating his aptitude. In 1991, he made a game-changing play against the New York Jets by forcing a fumble and recovering it at the opponent’s yard line, which increased his notoriety. Bears head coach Mike Ditka believed that Michael was his most difficult athlete to coach.
In his professional wrestling career, Michael assisted Lawrence Taylor at WrestleMania XI and provided guest commentary on “Monday Night Raw.” Later, in 1995, he joined WCW and made his commentary debut on “WCW Monday Nitro.” Ric Flair chatted with Michael’s wife, Debra, during a wrestling match. McMichael responded by challenging Flair to a match. During the match, chaos ensued as the valets of both wrestlers pursued their spouses.
Debra left McMichael for Jarrett as a result of Jarrett’s expulsion from the Horsemen. However, Steve vowed revenge and won the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship by defeating Jarrett. Michael became one of Goldberg’s earliest victims after Debra recruited him to target him. Michael reclaimed his Super Bowl medal after initially losing it to Goldberg by attacking him with a pipe.
Steve briefly participated in professional wrestling. Prior to his final appearance on “Nitro” in 1999, he engaged in a WCW dispute with the nWo. McMichael later returned to wrestling as a referee for the Bound For Glory pay-per-view event of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. During a three-count in the Monster’s Ball Match, his sluggish cadence stood out. In 1996, despite his football achievements, Michael was named the Worst Television Announcer by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
