Early Years

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in Syracuse, New York on July 3, 1962. His father was an electrical engineer, and his mother taught special education. There are three sisters in Tom’s family. Tom’s first cousin William Mapother also became an actor and has appeared in a number of films alongside Tom.

Tom Cruise’s early years were spent travelling around the United States, with a brief sojourn in Canada after his father was hired by the Canadian Armed Forces. Later, Tom would assert that his father was a bully who struck him and his siblings. He attended 15 institutions over the course of fourteen years.

Tom did not always aspire to pursue a career in acting. Even though he did attend drama classes in middle school, he was primarily a jock. In high school, he switched to acting after a knee injury forced him to leave the wrestling team. Cruise devoted himself to the drama club and won the main role in Guys and Dolls in short order.

Tom remained uninterested despite positive evaluations and encouragement of his acting skills. He attended St. Francis Seminary in Cincinnati in an attempt to become a Franciscan priest. Due to his imbibing, he was expelled from seminary school.

1980 marked Tom’s graduation from Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey.

Profession

After graduating from secondary school, Cruise moved to New York City to pursue a career as an actor. He quickly relocated to Los Angeles to audition for television roles.

Tom made his film début in 1981 with a minor role in “Endless Love.” In the same year, he received critical acclaim for his performance in “Taps.” This role also led to Tom’s signing with the prestigious talent agency CAA. Paula Wagner, an agent at CAA, made Tom’s case directly to agency managing partner Michael Ovitz. Tom would not only become a lifelong CAA client, but he and Paula would also establish Cruise/Wagner Productions in the early 1990s.

“The Outsiders” brought Tom additional acclaim.

In 1983, Tom’s performance in the comedy-drama “Risky Business” made him a celebrity. Risky Business grossed $64 million on a $6 million budget and produced several cultural touchstones. The film established Cruise as a rising star and garnered him a nomination for his first Golden Globe.

Success

With the tremendous success of “Top Gun” in 1986, Tom Cruise became one of the most renowned actors in the world. Top Gun earned $360 million worldwide and was the year’s highest-grossing film.

During the same year, he co-starred with Paul Newman in “The Colour of Money.”

1988 saw the publication of “Cocktail” and “Rainman,” two more successful singles. The film Rain Man received four Academy Awards. The following year, he received his first Oscar nomination for “Born on the Fourth of July.”

1990’s “Days of Thunder” was followed by “Far and Away” (1992), “A Few Good Men” (1992), “The Firm” (1993), and “Interview with the Vampire” (1994). For A Few Good Men, he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Tom Cruise starred in and produced the 1996 blockbuster “Mission: Impossible,” which garnered $457 million worldwide and spawned several successful sequels. In the same year, Tom starred in “Jerry Maguire,” which grossed $275 million on a $50 million budget and earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. His co-star Cuba Gooding, Jr. earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
