Tori Amos Birthday

Who could have predicted that the daughter of a Methodist minister would become one of the most successful rock stars? Amos grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and other rock music, much to her conservative Christian parents’ chagrin.

Amos grew up with her brother Mike and sister Marie in Baltimore, Maryland. While her siblings were required to take formal piano instruction, she was never required to do so. Amos taught himself to play the piano by herself. She was so talented that at age two she could reproduce melodies she had only heard once. At age three, Amos wrote her first compositions. At the age of five, she was accepted into the prestigious Peabody Conservatory, making her the youngest individual to accomplish this feat.

By the age of 13, Amos was performing at various piano bars in Maryland, accompanied by her father, who had adopted his daughter’s passion for modern music. Her father sent demo cassettes to record labels that she continued to record on. Amos began her professional music career in 1979 after being signed by Atlantic Records and relocating to Los Angeles, where she performed at gay bars and piano bars. In 1986, she began a professional music career with her ensemble ‘Y Kant Tori Read.’ One writer from “Billboard” even referred to their music as “bimbo music.”

Amos began her solo career in 1990 with the critically acclaimed release of “Little Earthquakes.” The album chronicled her life story and experiences, ranging from her religious upbringing and conflict with her parents over her lifestyle choices to her sexual assault after moving to Los Angeles. The album “Little Earthquakes” was her breakthrough, peaking at No. 15 in the U.K. and garnering popularity among alternative rock fans in the U.S. In 1994, her subsequent album, “Under the Pink,” peaked at number 12 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and at number one in the U.K.

Amos was one of the few female artists to achieve five or more U.S. Top 10 album debuts in the mid-2000s, when both “The Beekeeper” and “American Doll Posse” debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. In her 2017 album “Native Invader,” Amos returned to her more aggressive style, examining environmental issues and American politics. Amos’ most recent album, “Ocean to Ocean,” was written and recorded in her private studio in Cornwall, United Kingdom, and released in 2021. In 2022, she toured the United States to promote the album, and in 2023, she will do the same in Europe.
