Gujarat Day History
Upon attaining independence, India was divided into numerous princely states and provinces. These states were restructured and incorporated into the Indian Union. The States Reorganisation Act of 1956 proposed reorganising the states based on the languages spoken in each region. Initially, people who spoke Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati, and Kutchi constituted the Bombay State. In the Bombay State, however, two significant linguistic communities emerged: those who spoke Marathi and Konkani and those who spoke Gujarati and Kutchi.
These factions demanded their own separate state. This ultimately resulted in the division of the Bombay State. In April 1960, the Bombay Reorganisation Act was enacted by the United States Congress.
To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Gujarati-speaking population celebrates Gujarat Day on May 1st. This day represents the cultural identity and heritage of Gujaratis. A number of events are planned to commemorate the occasion.
