India’s sports calendar 2023: Hockey World Cup, Asian Games, others

India’s athletes will attempt to continue the momentum that began during the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, when they won a record number of medals. The year 2023 promises to be another action-packed one for India’s sports scene.

The different Olympic qualifiers for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris will be in full swing in 2023, making it a crucial year for Indian athletes seeking a spot at the Summer Games.

In addition to the yearly Asian and world championships for various sports and the tennis Grand Slams, the 2023 sports calendar includes a number of major quadrennial events. The future FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 will be held in January in Odisha, India, while the Asian Games, which were postponed from last year due to COVID-19, will be held in September in Hangzhou, China.

Although India will not participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in New Zealand and Australia, the football World Cup in July-August will be a show for Indian supporters.

However, the Indian men’s football team has qualified for the AFC Asian Cup 2023, which was slated to take place in China from 16 June to 7 July. In order to escape the summer heat in the Gulf region, the continental championship may be moved to late 2023 or early 2024 if Qatar is selected as the venue at the last minute.

Fans will expect to PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy, and Kidambi Srikanth to bring home more trophies from prominent international championships in 2023, following India’s historic victory in the Thomas Cup in 2022.
