Aquaman 2: Despite James Gunn’s official declaration that the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) has concluded, Aquaman 2 will likely be DC fans’ last glimpse of the DCEU. The film appears to take up where the first Aquaman film left off, but the Aquaman 2 cast has been drastically affected by the Amber Heard-Johnny Depp controversy.
Other than this factor, this film has been anticipated for quite some time, and its release is eventually approaching. Since there are high expectations for Aquaman 2, we don’t want you to overlook any subsequent details. So, in this article, let’s find out all we know about Aquaman 2 aka Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Aquaman 2 Release Date
Aquaman 2 is scheduled for release in the United States on 20 December 2023; however, the UK release date is listed as 29 December 2023. If true, this is an odd decision given the significant disparity between the two release dates. Aquaman 2 was originally scheduled for release on December 16, 2022, but its release date was moved back to March 17, 2023, so that the visual effects could be refined and completed.
Due to the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard court case, the filmmakers were forced to reshoot portions of the film. Later, its release date was moved back even further to December 20, 2023.
Aquaman 2 Cast
On September 11, 2023, DC Studios published a brief trailer for the forthcoming Aquaman 2 film on YouTube. In the description of that teaser, the following Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom cast members are mentioned:
“All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.“
Yes, I am aware that Amber Heard is still in the film, but her screen time has reportedly been reduced to 8 minutes. Other than that, the entire ensemble of the film is identical to the first Aquaman film. Here is a roster of characters and cast members:
- Aquaman/Arthur Curry – Jason Momoa
- Orm – Patrick Wilson
- Mera – Amber Heard
- Black Manta – Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
- Atlanna – Nicole Kidman
- King Nereus – Dolp Lundgren
- Dr. Stephen Shin – Randall Park
Aquaman 2 Trailer
The first official trailer for Aquaman 2 was released on September 14, 2023, and guys, this trailer has given me significant optimism for this film. The trailer depicts Black Manta’s return in a much more menacing guise, wielding a black trident. The VFX, cinematography, and even the color grading on this film appear to have been executed with the uttermost skill, as demonstrated by the trailer.
This trailer has gotten me excited for December 20, and I can’t wait to see Aquaman and Black Manta in an epic battle. What about you, though? Are you as enthusiastic as I? Comment below with your thoughts regarding the trailer.
Aquaman 2 Storyline
Aquaman 2 appears to take up exactly where the first film left off. Black Manta was trounced by Aquaman, and he is a particularly bitter loser. In Aquaman 2, Black Manta returns to complete his mission of avenging his father and to steal everything Aquaman holds sacred. This time, however, Black Manta wields a weapon of mass devastation known as the Black Trident.
Aquaman cannot face such a formidable foe alone, so he enlists the aid of his imprisoned sibling Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Together, they stand against Black Manta as the last line of defense to save the world and protect everything they hold dear.
Now, I’m not going to lie, that plot does look enticing, but it appears to be a standard plot for a superhero film and nothing special. The visuals will be the defining aspect of this film, and it appears that the developers are well aware of this.
The unique aspect of this film is that it is the final DCEU film and will serve as a farewell to Henry Cavill’s Superman, who was rebooted in Superman: Legacy, Ben Afflick’s Batman, who was easily one of the best Batman actors, and many other characters we grew to love. So gentlemen, let’s treat this film with respect and see you in theaters near you!
