Shows Like Shetland: Since its debut in 2014, Shetland has had an incredible journey. The Scottish crime thriller, which is based on Ann Cleeves’s writing, appeals to viewers because of its compelling plot, top-notch acting, and striking cinematography.

Fans have been discussing the possibility of a season 9 despite the fact that season 8 was only recently published in the second half of last year. Shetland’s fan base has grown over time, so it’s probable that another season is in the works.

When Douglas Henshall’s Jimmy Pérez, the primary character for the first seven seasons, failed to appear in season eight, fans were taken aback. Rather, Ashley Jensen made her debut as Ruth Calder in the most recent season. It seems that Shetland has not suffered from the transition, despite many people’s concerns.

Shows Like Shetland

As with the previous seasons, viewers enjoyed season 8’s intricate plot and fully realised characters. Fans may have a lengthy wait ahead of them because the most recent season was only published a few months ago. They may enjoy excellent mystery thriller series that are just as intriguing as Shetland while they wait for season 9.

1) Unforgotten

This episode focuses on the difficulties faced by London detectives in trying to solve cold cases, which can be quite complex situations. From seasons 1-4, Nicola Walker portrayed DI Sunny Khan, who was portrayed by Sanjeev Bhaskar, alongside the principal character, DCI Cassie Stuart. When Sinéad Keenan assumed the role of DCI Jessie James in season 5, she succeeded Walker.

Like Shetland, the programme has a compelling storyline that is full of unexpected turns. The clever banter between the protagonists is one of the show’s greatest features.

2) The ABC Murders

The acclaimed novelist Agatha Christie is a master at crafting an engrossing mystery. This television series, which is based on the novel by the same name, centres on Hercule Poirot, played by John Malkovich, who gets mysterious letters written ABC from a murderer. To prevent the murderer from carrying out his deadly rampage, the retired investigator needs to quickly decipher them.

The screenplay is still effective even though it somewhat veers from the original story. particularly when captivating performances and inventive directing enhance it. With just three episodes, this mystery programme is perfect for a weekend binge, unlike Shetland.

3) Hidden/Craith

This Welsh criminal drama, which spans three seasons and twenty episodes overall, is reminiscent to Shetland. Investigating a fresh case are Sian Reese-Williams’s character, DI Cadi Jones, and Siôn Alun Davies’s character, Owen Vaughan.

They learn that a lady who vanished years ago was held hostage for a long time after discovering her body in the woods. It doesn’t take long to realise that she might not be the abductor’s only victim.

The show’s genuine and captivating storyline must be its primary attraction. It is written really well. As in Shetland, the breathtaking settings enhance the viewing experience as well.

4) The Investigation

The Investigation, a brief television series consisting of just six episodes, is rooted in the real-life experiences of journalist Kim Wall. After entering the UC3 Nautilus to speak with Peter Madsen, the ship’s owner, she vanished from sight. Søren Malling plays Chief Inspector Jens Møller in the film.

The way the plot develops in Shetland is one of its strongest features; it can hold viewers’ attention for the whole season. The specifics of the actual events that served as the basis for this presentation are previously known to the audience. But it’s presented in such a compelling way that it’s difficult to turn away.

5) Van der Valk

One of the things that draws viewers to Shetland is its intricate cases, which is also a feature of this crime thriller. Marc Warren plays police investigator Van der Valk in this film, which is based on novels by Nicolas Freeling. The fact that this programme is a relaunch of Van der Valk, which ran from 1972 until 1992, will be of interest to movie buffs.

There are nine episodes altogether across its three seasons. Warren’s engrossing depiction of the nuanced character elevates this programme above the others.Fans of Shetland will also appreciate the visually arresting cinematography, which enhances the clever story.

6) Mare of Easttown

Similar to Shetland, this short series of only seven episodes highlights intriguing people. Investigating a young girl’s murder, Marianne “Mare” Sheehan (Kate Winslet) is at the centre of it all. Another girl is reported missing at the same moment.

Winslet has often shown that she has a talent for portraying nuanced roles. The performer is excellent in the role of Mare, who is striving to keep her personal life together while wanting to solve the crime.

7) Sherwood

The 2004 killings that occurred in Nottinghamshire, England, served as the basis for this episode. Six episodes of season 1 have been released thus far. There are rumours that another season is in the works. David Morrissey plays the main role in it.

Viewers who enjoy the episodic nature of Shetland will find this episode to be pleasing. In addition to the compelling story, the performers do a fantastic job of grabbing the audience’s attention from the start.

8) Magpie Murders

It is a two-part story adaption of Anthony Horowitz’s novel. One delves into the specifics of the mystery book penned by Conleth Hill’s fake author Alan Conway. The other tells the story of Lesley Manville’s character, publishing editor Susan Ryeland, as she searches for the book’s last chapter and looks into Conway’s unexplained death.

Despite having a lighter tone than Shetland, this six-episode series is nonetheless engaging and fascinating. It also makes it difficult to predict the conclusion, which keeps spectators on the edge of their seats.

9) Three Pines

This is only one of several titles on the list that are adaptations. This drama, which stars Rossif Sutherland, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Alfred Molina, and others, is based on the writings of Louise Penny. The protagonist of the tale is Molina’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, who conducts investigations in the town of Three Pines, where nothing is as it seems.

Similar to Shetland, this film boasts an amazing story, excellent performances, and breathtaking scenery. With eight episodes in all, this is ideal for fans seeking something brief yet captivating.

10) Panhandle

Though undoubtedly more chaotic than Shetland, this criminal drama is nevertheless entertaining to watch. It centres on Tiana Okoye’s character, Cammie Lorde, a traffic officer who teams up with Luke Kirby’s quirky character, Bell Prescott, to investigate the weird killings that have been occurring.

It’s one of the most oddball shows on this list, but it’s also funny and captivating. It is engaging and well-written, with a cast of compelling characters to hold viewers’ interest.
