Day of National Unity is celebrated annually in Tajikistan on June 27 and is one of the country’s most important festivals. In 1997, on this date, President Emomali Rakhmon signed a peace treaty to terminate the 1992 Civil War. This treaty is regarded as one of the country’s most significant historical documents because it not only ended the conflict but also allowed Tajikistan to develop a more democratic political system.

The background of Day of National Unity (Tajikistan)

In May 1992, a conflict broke out in Tajikistan between factions from various regions of the country. People from Garm and Gorno-Badakhshan rioted against the previous administration of President Rahmon Nabiyev, which was heavily influenced by the regions of Khujand and Kulob. As a consequence of the conflict between the regions, a five-year civil war erupted.

In the southern region of the nation, Russian border guards supported the government, which consisted primarily of former Soviet ruling elite. The opposition was headed by a coalition of liberal democratic reformers and Islamists known as the “United Tajik Opposition” During the conflict, an estimated 20,000 to 100,000 people were killed, and a significant portion of the country’s population had to relocate. In September 1992, opposition protesters forced former leader Rahmon Nabiyev to resign from the presidency. In December 1992, the parliament elected a new administration, and Emomali Rahmon became Tajikistan’s representative.

However, the conflict persisted for an additional four years, aided by groups from neighbouring nations such as Afghanistan. The war peaked in 1992 and 1993, the first two years of the conflict, when Kulobi militias committed homicides, mass killings, village burnings, and expelled people from the Pamiri and Garmi regions to Afghanistan. The civil conflict only ended when President Emmali Rahrom signed the peace treaty on June 27, 1997. On this day, Tajiks celebrate the Day of National Unity, which was declared a paid holiday in 1998.
