WHAT JELLYFISH DAY IS ALL ABOUT

Invertebrates that live in the sea, like jellyfish, have been around for a very long time—even longer than dinosaurs. Scientists have always thought that jellyfish evolved around 500 million years ago. In 2007, fossils of 505-million-year-old jellyfish were found in Utah, U.S., proving that this idea was correct. This discovery really blew my mind because jellyfish don’t leave behind much evidence of their presence because they don’t have bones.

People have always been confused by jellyfish, especially because of the way their bodies are built. Early scientists were so confused by these guys’ mostly clear bodies, wiry tentacles, and lack of body organs that they couldn’t even put them into a category. Back then, there were only plants, animals, and people. While jellyfish were not plants, they were also not clearly animals either. The world just labeled them as “incomplete” and didn’t look into them any further, at least not until the microscope was made. Naturalists had to rethink their categories and come up with new definitions for each one because many of these “incomplete” organisms didn’t fit nicely into any of the ones they made.

While Charles Darwin first talked about evolution in 1859—”all living things show a variation in physical traits over time as a process of natural selection”—the jellyfish didn’t really become known until after that. After that, in 1866, the German biologist and naturalist Ernst Haeckel wrote a book called “Generelle Morphologie der Organismen,” which means “General Morphology of Organisms.” Including jellyfish, he drew the development of many organisms to show how basic animal forms changed over time to become the ones we know today. His idea was that jellyfish looked so different from other species because they split off from other living things earlier.

The world started looking into the species and hasn’t stopped since. We are also rethinking the use of “fish” in the name “jellyfish” at the same time. Animals with backbones are often called “fish,” and experts now sometimes call them “jellies” as well. This (somewhat) invasive species has lived and done well almost everywhere in the world because it doesn’t need much air. They can live in any kind of water, eat a lot of different things, have lots of babies very quickly, and shrink when their food supplies run out, only to grow back when food comes back.
