It has been 49 years since Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura became independent states in the northeast. Under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act of 1971, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura were granted statehood on 21 January 1972. Manipur is bordered by Nagaland to the north, Mizoram to the south, Assam to the west, and Myanmar to the east along its international border.

Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, this year’s statehood celebration in Manipur will involve fewer cultural events, such as the perfuming of their cultural dance and others.
