When direct rule was put in place in March 1975, some leaders of the biggest rebellion groups decided to give up their weapons and accept the constitution. However, a small group of leaders did not agree and kept up their insurgent work.
Peace measures started by the Nagaland Baptist Church Council in the 1960s were very important. They helped end decades of violence and took a concrete, positive form in early 1964. The Nagaland Peace Council set it up in 1972. The government has tried to stop the violence, but it hasn’t been completely successful. In 2012, the leaders of the state asked India’s central government to help them solve their problems through politics.
