Pakistan Independence Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Pakistan

Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh were once a portion of the Indian subcontinent, a massive landmass that included all three countries.

The 14th of August, Pakistan Independence Day, could be considered a double day of liberation. Muslim Indians fought for independence from British rule and subsequently rearmed to fight for their own nation-state, Pakistan, which was once a part of the Indian subcontinent. After the British suppressed the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Crown assumed complete control over the British Raj. This lasted until 1947, when Pakistan gained its independence. The Mountbatten Plan created an independent Muslim nation by separating Pakistan (consisting of West and East Pakistan) from India. In 1971, East Pakistan achieved its own independence and changed its name to Bangladesh. Today, West Pakistan is simply referred to as Pakistan.

The most important Independence Day ceremony is held in Islamabad, where the national flag is raised atop the Parliament and Presidency structures. This is followed by the national anthem and widely disseminated and televised speeches from Pakistan’s president and prime minister.

Pakistan celebrates Pakistan Independence Day as a national holiday.

The nation’s 74th Independence Day will be celebrated in 2021.

The background of Pakistan Independence Day

The establishment of Pakistan is a remarkable and quite singular event in modern history.

Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh were once a portion of the Indian subcontinent, a massive landmass that included all three countries. Since the introduction and adoption of Islam in the subcontinent, the peace has been disturbed by clashes and Hindu persecution of Muslims. After the War of Independence in 1857, intellectual thought and philosophies were implemented to protect the Muslim minority.

The circumstances were not favourable to the Muslim community, but the subcontinent’s oppressed Muslims were able to realise their dreams of independence through courage and faith. In 1906, the All-India Muslim League was established, and on October 1 of the same year, the first delegation of 36 Muslim leaders presented their demand for a separate state for Muslims to the viceroy of India in Simla.

The concept of Pakistan and the liberation of Muslims would have remained unrealized if not for the superhuman efforts and struggle of one man. Muhammad Ali Jinnah was an attorney and politician who became the founding father of Pakistan. Jinnah led the All-India Muslim League from 1913 until Pakistan’s independence in 1947.

Allama Muhammad Iqbal was an additional visionary who pushed for the separation of India’s Muslims. Iqbal proposed the concept in his presidential address on December 29, 1930, in Allahabad. The Allahabad Address is now a historical revolution. The term ‘Pakistan’ first appeared in a pamphlet titled “Now Or Never” in 1933.

It was a significant day in history. The session was attended by prominent Muslim leaders from all over India, and there was ultimately a legitimate resolution to the Muslims’ centuries-long struggle for independence and sovereignty. The turning point occurred on February 20, 1947, when British Prime Minister Clement Attlee announced that India would be granted comprehensive autonomy by June 1948. Lord Mountbatten, the former viceroy of India, issued the ‘June Plan’ after multiple consultations with the British government and Congress leaders.

The Indian Congress and the Muslim League both supported Mountbatten’s proposal. The British parliament passed the Indian Independence Act in July 1947. On July 20, separate provisional administrations were created for Pakistan and India. On August 14, 1947, the vast subcontinent of British India was finally divided into the two nations of India and Pakistan.

The partition was rife with violence and slaughter. Since the conception of the concept of a separate nation for Muslims, Hindu brutality has increased, and Jinnah and the other Muslim leaders’ plans to establish a sovereign identity for Muslims have been met with significant opposition. Descendants and families were annihilated, and stories of partitions continue to be collected and archived to this day.

“You are allowed to visit your temples. You are allowed to visit your mosques or other places of worship in this Pakistani state. You may be a member of any religion, caste, or creed; this has nothing to do with state affairs.” According to Muhammad Ali Jinnah
