The background of Victims of Violence Wholly Day

Victims of Violence Day is one of three memorial days commemorating the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis on April 4, 1968. It signifies his demise. King was one of the foremost leaders in the struggle against racial segregation. In 1929, he was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and he spent his entire existence fighting for equality and the end of racial injustice. The nonviolent and peaceful nature of his demonstrations reflected two of his influences: Gandhi and Jesus Christ.

Together with other civil rights activists, King founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), which he led until his death. The Birmingham Campaign, initiated by the SCLC, protested racial segregation and discriminatory housing practises through boycotts, sit-ins, and marches. King was arrested, and from jail he wrote “Letter From Birmingham Jail,” which eternally altered people’s perspectives. King was detained approximately thirty times for civil rights activities during his lifetime.

In 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. helped organise the March on Washington and delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, one of the most well-known pleas for equality and freedom in history. The March on Washington contributed to the ratification of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. During the final months of his existence, King’s attention shifted to assisting the poor. Consequently, he organised the Poor People’s Campaign. On April 4, 1968, he was assassinated while standing on the veranda of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Tragically, he did not complete this campaign.
