1. Navy Federal Credit Union

Navy Federal Credit Union stands out. It holds more than $203 billion in assets. That makes it the biggest credit union in the United States. Its total is over three times the size of the next institution on the list.

Navy Federal mainly works with active-duty service members, veterans, and people who work for the Department of Defense. It also serves family members who are eligible. As of March 31, 2026, it said it had about 15.3 million members. It also reported $203.5 billion in assets.

2. State Employees’ Credit Union

SECU built its standing by focusing on state workers and other public-sector employees. It also serves additional people who qualify. It has nearly $60 billion in assets. That keeps it in second place in the country.

6. First Technology Federal Credit Union

Why Credit Unions Continue To Grow?

The new ranking is coming out while the U.S. credit union sector keeps growing. The National Credit Union Administration says federally insured credit unions had $2.48 trillion in assets in the first quarter of 2026. That is $117 billion more than a year earlier, a rise of 4.9%. Total membership reached 145.8 million. At the same time, the count of federally insured credit unions slipped to 4,250 as mergers and consolidation kept going.

This mix of growth and consolidation is one reason big credit unions have gained more weight. Smaller credit unions still matter a lot to the cooperative finance system. Still, the top institutions now work on a larger scale than most people would have predicted years ago.

Credit Unions Vs. Banks: What’s The Difference?

One key point is who owns the place. Banks are usually run for shareholders. Credit unions are cooperative and are owned by their members.

Credit unions also tend to be set up for a specific group. That can mean an employer, a job field, military service, a local area, or another qualifying link. The rules for joining are not the same everywhere. So a person may not be able to join even if a credit union is among the largest.
