What is a Spicy Hermit Cookie?
A Spicy Hermit Cookie is a type of cookie that is made with molasses, ginger, and cinnamon. These cookies are typically associated with the fall and winter seasons.
The History of the Spicy Hermit Cookie
The Spicy Hermit Cookie is a traditional Newfoundland cookie that dates back to the early 1800s. The cookies were originally made with molasses and spices, and were said to be a favourite of Sir John Franklin, the British explorer who died while searching for the Northwest Passage. The cookies were brought to Newfoundland by British soldiers stationed in the colony, and eventually became a staple of the Newfoundland diet.
The cookies became known as “Spicy Hermits” due to their similarity to the American cookie known as the “Gingerbread Hermit.” The Spicy Hermit Cookie is a darker, more molasses-flavored version of the Gingerbread Hermit, and was said to be more popular with sailors due to its ability to withstand long voyages without going bad.
The Spicy Hermit Cookie was also popular among fishermen and other workers in the Newfoundland outports, as it was a hearty and nutritious snack that could be easily carried in a pocket or lunch pail. Today, the Spicy Hermit Cookie is still a popular treat in Newfoundland, and can be found in bakeries and supermarkets throughout the province.
