The background of Chakri Day
Since 1782, when the first Chakri king started his reign, Thailand has been graced by five Chakri monarchs. The Thai people have justifiable affection and respect for the royal family. The Chakri royal family has strengthened Thailand’s diplomatic ties with the rest of the world and supported the arts, sciences, and technology. They have also built some of Thailand’s most significant educational and public institutions.
monarch Rama I was the first monarch of the Chakri dynasty. (1782 to 1809). Chaophraya Chakri was the name of this famous military commander. He founded the Chakri Dynasty and constructed the Grand Palace. King Rama IV (1851–1868) was an important member of the dynasty; he was a monastic for 27 years before ascending to the throne. He was instrumental in modernization and introduced Western science to the nation. Following him was King Rama V (1868 to 1910). He governed Thailand for 42 years and is still revered by the Thai people. He abolished slavery, established modern administration and legal systems, and modernised the financial and educational sectors. His diplomatic abilities made Thailand the only country in the region never to have been colonised!
The 1932 revolution made King Rama VII the last absolute monarch of Thailand. Since he accepted the proposition for a constitutional regime, the monarchy has assumed a prominent role in Thai politics. Then came King Rama IX, to whom the title of King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great was bestowed. The current monarch is King Rama X, who resides in Bangkok. His offspring are not potential heirs to the throne.
