Abergavenny Food Festival 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

During the height of the Roman Empire, Abergavenny hosted the Roman legions in the British Isles as a fort. This fort was constructed to keep the calm between the local English and Welsh tribes and to protect the river passages.

The Abergavenny culinary Festival, as suggested by its name, is a culinary festival held on the third weekend of September in the Welsh town of Abergavenny. This year’s celebrations will take place from September 16 to September 17. As a brief introduction to the location, Abergavenny is a Welsh municipality approximately six miles from the English border that serves as a gateway to Wales. Formerly the site of an ancient Roman fort, the community is now more well-known for its cuisine and culture.

The background of Abergavenny Food Festival

During the height of the Roman Empire, Abergavenny hosted the Roman legions in the British Isles as a fort. This fort was constructed to keep the calm between the local English and Welsh tribes and to protect the river passages. Even at that time, in order to sustain the army stationed at the fort, the surrounding area was filled with marketplaces where people engaged in unrestricted commerce; the profits were collected as taxes and sent to Rome.

Later, when England became a kingdom and many Welsh territories became a part of it, the town was frequently besieged and pillaged by English, Scottish, and Viking armies. Consequently, the structures of this hamlet were constructed in a manner that makes them temporary. The marketplace was formerly known as the “traitors’ market” because deserters from the army would frequently reside in the town as merchants to start their own businesses.

Staying true to its marketplace-like culture and aesthetic, the town expanded over the 18th and 19th centuries to become a legitimate commercial and agricultural centre. With an expanding population, the city grew and gained prominence. During the 1970s and 1980s, when cattle were infected with Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (B.S.E. ), the town’s economy suffered greatly. To combat the effects of the crisis, the municipality intended to initiate something that would generate an alternative source of income.

Chris Wardle and Martin Orbach, two farmers, founded the Abergavenny Food Festival at the end of the 1990s. The festival has received so much publicity and attention over the years that it is now on the agenda of many individuals. People from all over the globe travel to Wales during the third weekend of September to attend the festival, which lasts for two days.
