Karva Chauth Legend
The precise beginning of this festival is unknown according to any official records. But other traditions in the Bhagwad Gita place the beginning of Karva Chauth in the mythical era.
The legend of Queen Veeravati is the most well-known of them. According to legend, out of love for their sister, her seven brothers deceived her into breaking her first Karva Chauth by misrepresenting a mirror as the moon. Veeravati received the news of her husband’s passing shortly after breaking the fast, which grieved her. She continued to cry until a goddess showed her and revealed the truth about what her brothers had done. The Lord of Death, Yama, was compelled to release the soul of her husband after she urged Veeravati to finish the ceremony.
The Mahabharata associates this day with the occasion when Arjuna abandoned the other Pandavas and travelled to the Nilgiris. They had many issues while he was away, so Draupadi appealed to Lord Krishna for assistance. He gave her the advice to fast for her husbands’ welfare. She performed all the ceremonies as he had instructed, which enabled the Pandavas to resolve all their issues.
Other origin stories for this event include those involving Satyavan and his wife Savitri as well as a Pati-vrata woman named Karwa.

Celebration
To mark their marriages with their husbands, married ladies dress up as brides and apply mehandi on this day. They break their fast at daybreak and continue to fast all day long until they see the moon. They worship and recount myths about the beginning of Karwa Chauth in the evening. They break the fast by giving water to the moon before their husbands when the moon appears. The wives are then given water and a treat by their husbands to help them break their fast.
Gifts are given to married ladies by their husbands and in-laws as a sign of affection and wealth. Unmarried women also fast on this day in several regions of India in the hopes of finding their ideal life partner.
‘Sankashti Chaturthi,’ a fasting day honouring Lord Ganesha, and Karwa Chauth occur on the same day each year. Married ladies observe the fasting and traditions of Karwa Chauth in hopes that their husband would live a long life. Married ladies worship Lord Shiva, His family, and Lord Ganesha. They do not break their fast until they have seen and made a sacrifice to the moon. In order to keep the stringent Karwa Chauth fast, nothing should be consumed after sunrise till the moon is visible at night.
‘Karak Chaturthi’ is another name for Karwa Chauth. The earthen pitcher known as the ‘Argha’, or water gift to the moon, is referred to as the ‘Karwa’ or ‘Karak. Karwa is presented as Dan to any qualified woman or Brahmin and is particularly significant during Puja.
In North Indian states compared to South Indian ones, Karwa Chauth is more well-liked. After Karwa Chauth has been celebrated for four days, the “Ahoi Ashtami Vrat” is observed for the benefit of kids.
Sargi
One of the most important aspects of Karwa Chauth Day is sargi. Before the sun rises, a special meal called sargi is consumed.
