Mysore Dasara, which commences on October 15, is a regal splendor and divine fervor celebration. This ten-day festival is celebrated with pomp and magnificence by the Wadiyar couple and the city as a whole. The celebration is replete with religious significance. Goddess Chamunda vanquished Mahishasur, a demon. Following his demise, the metropolis was rechristened Mysuru, or Mysore. Devotees constructed a Chamundeshwari temple. The day commences with the Wadiyar royal couple presenting incense to this deity, which is subsequently followed by an extensive array of cultural activities, including a special durbar (royal assembly). A magnificent procession is conducted on the tenth day, (Vijaydashmi).
The background of Mysore Dasara
Since four millennia ago, the regal Wadiyar family has organized events for the general public and tourists in observance of this festival. Cultural programs at the palace, food festivals, fairs, flower displays, and children’s events all contribute to the vibrancy of the city. Dasara is widely observed throughout India with great religious zeal, and individuals of all faiths partake in the cultural festivities.
In the documentation compiled by the Persian ambassador Abdur Razzaq, Dasara festivities in Mysore during this time period are detailed. Raja Wadiyar commenced the Dasara Celebrations. Since then, the royal family has observed the festival. The custom of hosting a special Durbar (court) during the festival celebrations was initiated by King Krishnaraja Wodeyar III and continues to this day.
Quite a few visitors to the palace were there to observe the Mysore Dasara. During Dasara, approximately 100,000 bulbs were used to illuminate the regal Mysore Palace alone; many more were employed to illuminate the remainder of the city.
