National Brownie Day 2023: The eighth of December is National Brownie Day. Every year on National Brownie Day, brownie enthusiasts travel great distances to celebrate. A good chocolate (or blondie) brownie is the ideal dessert to cap off your evening; it’s rich, chewy, and warm. Savor the deliciousness and allow the outside world to disappear for a little while.
According to legend, brownies were first created in 1893 at the Palmer House Hotel. Renowned Chicago socialite Bertha Palmer asked a pastry chef to create a dessert fit for women attending the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, since her husband owned the hotel. She asked for a cake-like treat that was tiny enough to fit in a box lunch.
The outcome was the apricot-glazed, walnut-topped Palmer House Brownie. Using the same recipe, the modern Palmer House Hotel serves a dessert to its guests. The dessert was given this name after 1893, but cook books and journals did not use it at that time.
By 1907, the brownie had gained widespread recognition and was featured in Maria Willet Howard’s Lowney’s Cook Book. It was a modified version of a “Bangor Brownie” recipe from the Boston Cooking School. It made the dessert richer by adding an extra egg and an extra square of chocolate.
The town of Bangor, Maine, which according to legend was the hometown of a housewife who invented the original brownie recipe, is where the name “Bangor Brownie” originates. It was primarily Maine food educator and columnist Mildred Brown Schrumpf who promoted the idea that brownies originated in Bangor.
The Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink rejected Schrumpf’s theory that “Bangor housewives” invented the brownie, but “The Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America” claimed to have discovered evidence in the form of numerous 1904 cookbooks that contained a recipe for “Bangor Brownies,” thereby supporting Schrumpf’s theory.
