Are you aware that the arrival of Sangamitta is the basis for Unduvap Full Moon Poya? Yes, this day honors the entry of Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Ashoka, into Sri Lanka in the month of Unduwap, carrying a Bo sapling from the revered Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in India. In December, the ninth month in the Sinhalese calendar, it typically occurs on the final full moon day of the year.

History

Sangamitta, the daughter of Ashoka, brought the Bo tree sapling to Anuradhapura and celebrated it on this national holiday in Sri Lanka. According to history, Lord Buddha meditated beneath a Bodhi tree in Bihar, India, and eventually attained enlightenment. Years later, on an Unduvap Poya day, Sangamitta and a few other royal family members entered the Sasanaya in Dambakolapatuna Port in Jaffna.

After being transported to Sri Lanka in a golden bowl, the revered Bo sapling was planted in the Mahamewna Garden in Anuradhapura. Bo saplings from this tree were transported to other regions of the island in order to disseminate Buddhism and its culture.

Additionally, Sangamitta has shared her varied talents in a variety of crafts and fields, including woodworking, farming, traditional medicine, etc., all of which have aided in the nation’s development. Every year on Unduvap Full Moon Poya day, thousands of Buddhist devotees swarm Anuradhapura to pay their respects to the holy Bo tree.

Additionally, it is said that during his lifetime, Lord Buddha traveled to Sri Lanka. The Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi Standing at Mahamevna Uyana is currently the most revered tree in the entire world.

Every full moon day is observed as a public holiday in Sri Lanka; these days each have their own names and honor significant Buddhist anniversaries. Every year, there are full moon days known as Poya. During these days, stores and establishments typically close, and the sale of meat and alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
