National Career Nurse Assistants Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about National Nurse Assistants Day

Assistants to nurses have existed for a very long time, actually since World War I! The conflict exhausted the tens of thousands of deployed nurses alongside the soldiers.

National Career Nurse Assistants Day kicks off National Nursing Assistants Week on the Thursday of the second full week of June every year. This year’s event occurs on June 15. We’d like to recognise these entry-level professionals who serve as liaisons between patients and physicians and dedicate their lives to helping others. Let us also honour those who serve others by providing them with the resources they require, such as scholarships for students who wish to pursue a career in service to others.

The background of National Career Nurse Assistants Day

Assistants to nurses have existed for a very long time, actually since World War I! The conflict exhausted the tens of thousands of deployed nurses alongside the soldiers. In response to this circumstance, the American Red Cross created the Volunteer Nurses’ Aide Service. This programme trained uncertified, volunteer young women to provide rudimentary assistance to overworked nurses as nursing assistants. They numbered close to 8,000 women who performed rudimentary triage and assisted in areas with severe staffing shortages, such as reserve, field, base and civilian hospitals. However, this occupation did not exist after World War I, and it did not reappear until World War II. The Red Cross reinstated the programme at that time, and these nursing assistants continued to volunteer (and some were even hired) after the conflict ended.

These women were not certified professionals as of yet. They received only on-the-job training. Numerous nursing auxiliaries ended up in nursing homes. In the 1980s, there were concerns about the quality of care supplied by untrained staff in these nursing homes. This issue was resolved with the passage of a special law mandating certification for all nursing assistants. This signified the transition in the profession. The emergence of numerous accreditation centres that provide training for aspirants.

People who wish to become nursing assistants can now obtain certification online, offline, or through a combination of the two from a variety of institutions and organisations, such as the American Red Cross. Nowadays, nursing assistants work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities, assisting the elderly, chronically unwell, and those unable to care for themselves with activities of daily living. National Network of Career Nursing Assistants sponsors National Career Nurse Assistants Day. They promote this day and National Nursing Assistants Training Week by requesting that communities express their appreciation and support for these nursing assistants.
