On January 18, 2023, the soccer star was in Miami, where Charlotte FC trained for nearly two weeks. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Anton was discovered unconscious around 3 p.m. near Miami Marine Stadium after two boats collided. Anton was given CPR and transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

Charlotte FC announced Anton’s death on Thursday morning. The club said in a statement, “We are profoundly saddened to report that Anton Walkes passed away tragically this morning.” David Tepper, the owner of Charlotte FC, stated that the entire team is “devastated” by Anton Walkes’ tragic death.

David said in the club’s statement, “He was an exceptional son, father, partner, and teammate whose zest for life touched everyone he met.” Anton made those around him better people in all aspects of life, and he represented Charlotte FC at the highest level on and off the field.

Born in London, Anton Walkes began his professional career with Tottenham Hotspur. Later, he played for MLS expansion teams Atlanta United and Charlotte FC, who acquired him in 2021.
