Black Student Suspended Twice: CNN was told by an attorney for the family of a black Texas high school student who was suspended because his loc hairstyle violated the district’s dress code that he was again suspended upon his return to school on Monday.
According to his family, Darryl George has been suspended for more than two weeks because his loc hairstyle violates the dress and hygiene code of the Barbers Hill Independent School District.
CNN previously reported that the code specifies that male students’ hair cannot extend below the eyebrows or below the earlobes.
Allie Booker, the family’s attorney, told CNN on Tuesday that school officials have requested a meeting with George and his mother to discuss the continued disciplinary action for his hairstyle violations.
The family has until Wednesday to confer with school officials, according to the attorney.

“What I expect for them to try to do is to put him out of school,” Booker told CNN. “But they won’t do it with our consent.”
The family was previously told the teen would be placed in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program, also known as alternative education, if he didn’t cut his hair, Booker said.
David Bloom, director of communications for the Barbers Hill Independent School District, stated in a statement shared with CNN that the district “is unable to comment on disciplinary matters involving a student.”
According to his mother, George, a junior at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, received numerous disciplinary action notes and was placed on in-school suspension for wearing his locs hairstyle in a ponytail.
She stated that Darryl was suspended the same week the state’s CROWN Act went into effect, which prohibits discrimination based on hair texture or protective hairstyles such as locs and braids.
His mother told CNN that legal action is being considered by the family.
She added that school officials informed George that his loc hairstyle was in violation of the district dress code, which states: “Male students’ hair must not extend below the top of a t-shirt collar or be gathered or worn in a style that would allow the hair to extend below the top of a t-shirt collar, below the eyebrows, or below the ear lobes when let down.”
A school official initially reprimanded George for his locs and for wearing frayed denim, both of which are prohibited.
