Bobby Hull’s Profession

In his rookie year, Hull finished second in the Calder Memorial Trophy voting. Hull, while a member of the Black Hawks, wore the numbers 16 and 7 at various times. Later, as a tribute to his childhood idol Gordie Howe, he adopted the legendary number nine. In 1959–60, three years into his NHL career, he won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer in goals and points.

He repeated this feat in the subsequent two seasons (1961–62 and 1965–1966). In 1961, under his leadership, the Chicago Black Hawks won the Stanley Cup for the third time and the first time in 23 years. Three times he finished in second place in scoring. On March 12, 1966, Hull tied Maurice Richard and Bernie Geoffrion for the NHL record for most goals in a season with 51.

When he scored his 51st goal against New York Rangers’ Cesare Maniago, the Chicago Stadium crowd applauded for seven minutes straight. By the end of the season, Hull had scored 54 goals, the most during the Original Six era for a single season. Hull surpassed Dickie Moore’s record of 96 points, set seven years prior, in the same year he broke the record for most points in a season.

His teammate Stan Mikita matched his point total the following year, and Phil Esposito surpassed it the year after. In the 1960s, Hull led the league in goals scored seven times. The Hawks missed the playoffs for the first time since Hull’s rookie season in 1966–1967, despite Hull scoring a career-high 107 points (second in the NHL that season) and breaking his goals in a season record by four (with 58).

Five times during his NHL career, he scored at least 50 goals. In context, this was only one less than the total number of goals scored by all other players in NHL history at the time. He was selected as an All-Star ten times, including ten times as a left winger, during his 15 full NHL seasons.

His skating speed was 29.7 miles per hour (47.8 kilometres per hour), and his slapshot speed was 118.3 miles per hour (190.5 kilometres per hour). According to reports, Hull’s wrist shot was more difficult than his slapshot as he attempted to become the first player to score 50 goals.

Bobby Hull’s Achievements in Hockey

Monday, the Chicago Blackhawks announced Bobby Hull’s death at age 84. Hull was a legendary hockey player who won the 1967 Stanley Cup. Bobby Hull was a “superstar” player for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1957 to 1972. The team issued a statement lamenting his death.

Hull is one of a select few players who have had a significant impact on our hockey team throughout its history. The Golden Jet was an integral part of the 1961 Stanley Cup run for the Chicago Blackhawks and gave our fans (whom he cherished) a lifetime of unforgettable moments. Bobby’s shooting prowess, skating ability, and general team leadership resulted in a franchise-record 604 career goals. He delighted generations of Chicago fans.

Please accept our sincere condolences to the Hull family. In 1063 career games, the 12-time NHL All-Star scored 610 goals and added 560 assists. The NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman, sent his condolences. As Bobby Hull prepared to take a slapshot, fans throughout the NHL stood in anticipation, and goalies from other teams braced themselves.

In his prime, no other hockey player scored at a higher rate than he did. Bettman stated in a statement that Hull was the public face of the Chicago Blackhawks during the 1960s and early 1970s due to his outgoing personality and explosive skating ability. The passing of one of the most legendary and original players in the National Hockey League is a significant loss.

Our condolences go out to Brett, his son and fellow Hockey Hall of Famer, and the rest of the Hull family, as well as the countless hockey fans around the world who were fortunate enough to witness him play or who have since admired his accomplishments. In 1972, Hull left the National Hockey League to join the World Hockey Association’s Winnipeg Jets (NHL).

Hull participated in the WHA for six years and was named league MVP twice. As captain, he led the Jets to two consecutive championships (in 1976 and 1978) and finished his career second in league history in goals and third in points. In 1983, the Golden Jet was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players. Hull’s son Brett is also inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
