His teammate Stan Mikita matched his point total the following year, and Phil Esposito surpassed it the year after. In the 1960s, Hull led the league in goals scored seven times. The Hawks missed the playoffs for the first time since Hull’s rookie season in 1966–1967, despite Hull scoring a career-high 107 points (second in the NHL that season) and breaking his goals in a season record by four (with 58).

Five times during his NHL career, he scored at least 50 goals. In context, this was only one less than the total number of goals scored by all other players in NHL history at the time. He was selected as an All-Star ten times, including ten times as a left winger, during his 15 full NHL seasons.

His skating speed was 29.7 miles per hour (47.8 kilometres per hour), and his slapshot speed was 118.3 miles per hour (190.5 kilometres per hour). According to reports, Hull’s wrist shot was more difficult than his slapshot as he attempted to become the first player to score 50 goals.
