Hamlin collapsed on the field at 8:56 p.m. EST on January 2, 2023, following a tackle on Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins during Week 17 of Monday Night Football against the Bengals.

Higgins caught a pass from Joe Burrow at the 50-yard line and sprinted downfield, colliding with Hamlin’s chest with his right shoulder early in the play. The defender Hamlin brought down Higgins by placing his arms over his shoulders and headgear. Analysts of sports described the challenge as routine but noted its abruptness.
