Derek Roan Loses His Life in Hospital: An inquest into the murder of a farmer in southern Scotland revealed that he was attacked by a recently-calved cow. Derek Roan, age 71, attempted to reintegrate a Galloway heifer and her calf into the main herd.
In June of the previous year, he was involved in an accident near Dalbeattie and sustained fatal thoracic injuries. Sheriff Joanna McDonald’s investigation revealed that Mr. Roan’s mortality could not have been prevented.

Other than that, there were no operational system problems. The incident, which occurred on a family-owned property, was the subject of a hearing at Dumfries Sheriff Court on 19 June 2022.
He was featured on BBC Two’s This Farming Life. He operates two dairy farms and a milk distribution business. Mr. Roan, as a “experienced rancher,” would have been “well aware” of the risks associated with working with cattle.
His entire life was spent working and residing in Barnbaroch with his wife and two sons. That day’s primary objective was to transport the mother cow and her newborn offspring.
His son spotted his father’s quad cycle in a field around 16:00 and assumed he was working nearby. A half-hour later, Mr. Roan was discovered with facial injuries, prompting the dispatch of an ambulance. Mr. Roan was transported to the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, but his illness was incurable.
According to testimony presented at the hearing, the severity of his injuries meant that finding him sooner would not have substantially increased his chances of survival. The child told investigators that his father was attacked by a cow because the animal was frightened of him.
In his resolution, he expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
