As a consequence of the widespread outrage ignited by the murder of George Floyd against police brutality, numerous cold cases involving fatalities that ensued after police confrontations have been reexamined and given fresh scrutiny.
Elijah McClain Cause of Death
In the 2019 death of 23-year-old African American man Elijah McClain, Aurora, Colorado police applied a chokehold, which is now prohibited by law. A 911 call was received on the evening of August 24, 2019, as Mr. McClain was returning home from a convenience store. The caller stated that Mr. McClain appeared suspicious due to his ski mask and menacing hand gestures.
As soon as the authorities arrived, they applied a carotid hold, a technique that effectively renders an individual unconscious by severing blood flow to the brain. This was the consequence of their unsuccessful attempt to handcuff Mr. McClain.

Mr. McClain’s mother, Sheneen McClain, established a GoFundMe page in an effort to raise funds for an investigation. In addition to the more than $2 million she raised, an online petition had more than 5 million signatures calling for the removal from duty and investigation of the involved police officers.
McClain’s Cause Of Death Was A Central Issue
Physicians who examined McClain’s cause of death and Aurora police officers who responded to the scene of the incident testified as witnesses at the trial, which commenced a month ago. No witnesses were presented by the defense. The prosecution presented body cam footage of the arrest in court, asserting that it provided evidence that the officers employed excessive or unnecessary force.
McClain repeatedly reported difficulty breathing, but the responding police officers refrained from disclosing this detail. His name was Elijah McClain, and he was making his way back to his family. The weight of his presence was perceived. “He mattered” was the opening statement of the prosecutor’s argument on Tuesday, Lyons.

The primary focus of the trial was determining whether the officers’ actions contributed to McClain’s demise. According to the testimony of a pulmonary critical care physician, the young man’s demise might have been averted had paramedics recognized his complications and administered the necessary medical attention.
Dr. Robert Mitchell Jr., a forensic physician, testified in court that McClain passed away as a result of “complications arising from the administration of acute ketamine during a violent assault while being restrained by emergency response personnel and law enforcement.” A “direct causal link” existed, according to his account, between the officers’ conduct and McClain’s demise.
In contrast, the defense team attributed the man’s demise to the ketamine injection as opposed to the police. Although the initial autopsy report stated that the cause of death was unknown, “complications of ketamine administration following forcible restraint” were identified as the true cause of death in a 2022 update.
Determining the cause of death was not possible. Dr. Stephen Cina, a signatory to the autopsy report, stated that there was insufficient evidence to suggest that police injuries were the cause of McClain’s death and that “without the ketamine administration, McClain would have likely been alive.”
In contrast, prosecutor Jason Slothouber contended that although the officers did not administer ketamine via injection to McClain, their failure to safeguard his airway resulted in his hypoxic and acidotic states. Slothouber asserts that the failure of officers to furnish paramedics with precise information upon their arrival “failed Elijah McClain.”
