Fourth of July 2023 in NYC: The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, commemorates the day Americans obtained independence from oligarchy, which was legitimized by the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

Public libraries:
There are no open public libraries in New York.
Commuter rail:
Staten Island Railway will operate according to a Saturday schedule. Saturday transit service will be provided by MTA.
According to the city’s Department of Transportation, the Staten Island Ferry will operate on a weekend schedule in honor of Independence Day. From 12 a.m. to 4 p.m., the ferry will operate every 30 minutes, and from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., it will operate every 20 minutes.
Fourth of July 2023 in NYC: Sanitation
- On July 4, trash, recycling, and compost collection, as well as street cleansing, will not occur. Residents who ordinarily have their trash and compost collected on Tuesdays may place their items at the curb between 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Tuesday for collection the following day.
- Tuesday evening, between 4:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., residents who ordinarily have trash or compost collection on Tuesday may place their items at the curb.
- Residents who normally have their recyclables collected on Tuesdays should position their items at the curb between 4 p.m. and 12 a.m. on Monday, July 10, for collection on Tuesday, July 11.

- There are no open U.S. Post Offices. July 4 is a holiday for FedEx. There will only be access to FedEx Critical
- Service. Exception made for Express Critical Service: UPS will be closed.
Shopping:
- From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Staten Island Mall in New Springville will be open.
- On July 4, Costco stores will be shuttered across the nation.
- Be sure to verify for closures or reduced hours before you shop, even though the majority of major retailers, restaurants, and supermarkets are open. According to the retail website Offers.com, the following are some of the main retailers that will be open and their hours:
