Who Was Richard Marc Evonitz?
In Columbia, South Carolina, on July 29, 1963, Richard was born to Joe and Tess Evonitz. Even when he was a little boy, Evonitz showed signs of having an angry personality. A study from Radford University on psychology says that when Evonitz was eight years old, he choked his younger sister until she passed out. Later, when he was in his early 20s, he broke into friends’ homes and made fake checks.
Jennifer Evonitz, Evonitz’s younger sister, said in an interview that their dad was strict and easily upset.
It felt like we were living in jail, and Joe was very strict. His goal was for us to get all A’s. It was about having power and being in charge. “Either you get an A or you get beat up.” I think of him as a cruel person who enjoyed making us unhappy. I could see it in his face.
At some point, Evonitz left his hard home and joined the US Navy. In 1987, when Evonitz was 23, he exposed himself to a 15-year-old girl and her 3-year-old sister. This was his first known sexual crime.
As soon as the police arrived, they arrested Evonitz. The Washington Post reported that he “confessed both orally and in writing to his guilt.” Also in the report, it says that the subject “said he has a problem with masturbating in front of girls.”
“When he feels like it, he drives around looking for a short, brunette girl between the ages of 18 and 19.” However, Evonitz only got a fine and was put on probation for this crime. In 1992, Evonitz got out of the Navy with honors and moved to Virginia. That’s where he began his horrible string of crimes.

The Crimes of Richard Evonitz
Richard Evonitz made the move to Pennsylvania and got a job as a salesman. It was said that women avoided him at work because he said hurtful things about women and had a short rage.
Around that time, in June 1995, he broke into a house with a gun and sexually attacked a 13-year-old girl. This was his first known violent crime.
After that, Evonitz took Sofia Silva, who was sixteen at the time, from her front yard in 1996. Silva was said to have gone outside to do his homework on the porch by the New York Daily News.
The only things Silva’s sister found outside when she went to check on her were her class notes and an empty grape drink can. In the end, the cops found Sofia Silva’s dead body in a marsh. Investigators saw that she had shaved her private parts.
On May 1, 1997, Evonitz took the Lisk girls from their front yard. Later, the police discovered the bodies of Kati Lisk (12) and Kristen Lisk (15) in the South Anna River. The girls had their private parts shaved. The study from Radford University says that fibers from both crime scenes could be used to link the crimes.
