When Jon Batiste’s wife Suleika Jaouad was hospitalised for cancer treatment and COVID prevented him from visiting her, he consoled her through the only means he knew how: music.
Day after day, the Grammy-winning jazz musician composed a new melody for Jaouad, “Butterfly,” which is featured on his most recent album, World Music Radio.
In 2021, Jaouad, a writer of 35 years old, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia for the second time. She and Batiste met as adolescents at a music camp, and after eight years together, they married the day before she received a bone marrow transplant in February 2022.
