Kristen Welker Takes the Helm at ‘Meet the Press’: Unsurprisingly, Kristen Welker is remarkable. According to NBC 10 Boston, the Harvard graduate “wished to become a journalist as early as sixth grade,” and she has accomplished this goal on multiple occasions. Kristen was hired by KRCR in Redding, California, after interning on the TODAY show during her senior year of college. She eventually returned to Philadelphia, where she worked as a correspondent for the NBC affiliate station WCAU.
This would ultimately lead to a network position at NBC News and the coveted position of White House Correspondent. Kristen was appointed co-anchor of Weekend TODAY 20 years after she made her TODAY debut. Now, the accomplished journalist has attained a new career milestone as she prepares to assume the Meet the Press hosting duties in September 2023. She is fortunate to have a robust support system at home. What is Kristen Welker’s marital status? Let’s get acquainted.
Kristen Welker Takes the Helm at ‘Meet the Press’: What is Kristen Welker’s marital status? The couple tied the knot in 2017.
On her first date with her future spouse, John Hughes, Kristen felt cautious optimism. Prior to this, she had essentially accepted that finding a companion and having children “might not happen for her,” she told The New York Times. However, when mutual acquaintances introduced her to John, she decided to give it a shot.
In October 2014, while visiting her parents in Philadelphia, the news correspondent had a dinner engagement with John. He was the director of marketing at Merck in Philadelphia. Apparently, he was unaware of Kristen. “As soon as she stepped out of the car, I knew I was out of my league,” he told the outlet. He intended to make her giggle. Thus, he did. They conversed for so long that she nearly missed her train back to Washington, D.C.
John travelled to Washington to see Kristen for their second date. She was scheduled to document a trip by President Barack Obama to Asia the following morning. Kristen almost cancelled the date due to her exhaustion, but she managed to pull herself together despite being over two hours late. John waited diligently, and when she arrived, he gave her a presidential trivia crossword he had created while he waited. She revealed to The New York Times, “That was the moment he had me”
John proposed to Kristen on the Lincoln Memorial steps in June 2016 when she was only in town for 24 hours. John said, “I wanted to propose to her outside in a place that our children could visit and learn was where we got engaged.” On March 4, 2017, they were married at the Hyatt at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia, a block away from the location of their first date.
John and Kristen have children?
John and Kristen’s daughter Margot Lane was born through a surrogate four years after their wedding. During an interview with Hoda Kotb on The Hoda Show (via TODAY), Kristen discussed the procedure. “I was a little anxious in the weeks leading up to the birth and delivery because I had never carried her before,” she told Hoda. “I had a small amount of self-doubt. Will I possess this mothering instinct? Will it take effect?”
Kristen’s OB-GYN intervened and suggested that she not only be present for the birth, but also assist in “catching the baby.” This would strengthen the relationship between Kristen and her daughter. Despite her fears that she wouldn’t know what to do, Kristen demonstrated her competence. “Therefore, as she was being born, I extended my hands… “At that moment, Hoda, all self-doubt disappeared,” she revealed.
John travelled five miles in the car with Kristen and Margot on the day they brought her home from the hospital. The entire time Kristen spoke to her daughter, Margot’s small hand was wrapped around her finger. “As I regarded her, I mused, ‘I can’t believe she’s mine. And I only pray I never disappoint her. I want to give her the entire universe.'”
