Louisiana Attorney General Race Heads to Runoff: In the November runoff election for the position of attorney general of Louisiana, a trial lawyer from New Orleans and a political newcomer will compete against a conservative longstanding deputy of Landry.
Republican solicitor general Liz Murrill, who received just under 50% of the vote in Saturday’s primary election with nearly all ballots counted, appeared to have secured a spot in the runoff. Lindsey Cheek, a Democrat, placed second, surpassing John Stefanski, a Republican from Crowley, who concluded in third place. Candidates were required to secure an absolute majority of the vote, thereby preventing a runoff, in order to win the election entirely.

In a head-to-head contest, voters in deep-red Louisiana are more likely to support a Republican than a Democrat. This bodes well for Murrill. However, they also represented a triumph for Cheek, an electoral neophyte whose campaign revolved around safeguarding the public from avaricious corporations and pollution, and who made strides in his career.
Landry vowed to vacate the attorney general’s office upon announcing his intention to compete for governor a year ago.
Louisiana’s relationship with the federal government and debates over oil and gas policy, abortion, and LGBTQ+ health care — the sorts of issues Landry has litigated vehemently throughout his career — will be significantly influenced by the runoff election to replace him.
As Cheek attempted to distinguish herself from fellow Democrat Perry Walker Terrebonne and Stefanski and Murrill vied for Republican votes against a third GOP candidate, Marty Maley, it became the most contentious statewide election on the ballot.

On Saturday, Murrill characterized the primary results as validation of her campaign, during which she advertised extensively on television stations, promoting conservative ideals while presenting herself as an experienced legal professional. Murrill has orchestrated a significant number of Landry’s legal arguments in the background throughout his almost eight years in office.
“I’m proud of the results we saw today which I believe reflect the enthusiasm this state has for my proven track record defending this state and our conservative values,” Murrill stated in a prepared statement.
Cheek, who was not immediately reachable, advocated, among other progressive causes, extending access to abortion and establishing consumer protections for those navigating Louisiana’s troubled insurance market while campaigning.
Murrill was considered the frontrunner for months on account of the financial backing she received from benefactors, many of whom she shares with Landry, and the ability to maintain her profile through television, radio, and digital advertising. The individual in question is an active participant of the Federalist Society, a non-partisan legal organization that strongly supports conservative ideals, such as the effort to overturn the landmark decision of Roe v. Wade. Murrill is regarded as the most conservative candidate in the election.
The determination of her potential opponent in the runoff was contingent on whether or not Stefanski and Cheek could amass sufficient support from a subset of moderate voters to defeat the other candidate. Typically, the Democratic Party secures a seat in runoff elections due to the voter breakdown in Louisiana. However, prior to the primary, political insiders-discussed internal polls and at least one public survey indicated that Cheek and Stefanski were tied for ballots.
Cheek eventually obtained sufficient support to advance.
Stefanski, a lawyer hailing from the small town of Crowley who authored severe fentanyl penalties in the legislature and assisted in the formation of Republican congressional boundaries, positioned himself as a candidate who takes crime seriously but also values cooperation.
A representative of Stefanski refused to comment on the outcomes.
Political insiders have characterized Murrill’s campaign as a surrogate operation of Landry’s, citing their shared professional networks and substantial reliance on campaign consultants and donors. Murrill has rejected this discriminatory characterization, arguing that her credentials ought to be sufficient to validate the claim.
Murrill has stated that she would lead the attorney general’s office independently of Landry’s influence should both she and Landry prevail in their respective elections. However, certain political analysts assert that there is little doubt that the two would enjoy a cordial relationship.
