On Saturday, May 20, Stevenson would have been confined to the hospital due to an unanticipated illness. The BBC received confirmation of his death from his advertising agency in the United States, Viewpoints, but no additional details regarding the circumstances or cause of death.

At the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where notable actors such as Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicholas Farrell, Jeremy Irons, and Gene Wilder studied acting, he received his degree at age 29.
