The federal deadline is much later. The U.S. Department of Education says it must receive the 2026-27 FAFSA by June 30, 2027. But waiting until the last date may not be a good idea because colleges and states can have their own earlier deadlines. Some financial aid also has limited money. For students who need help paying for college, filing the FAFSA can open the door to federal grants, work-study and federal student loans. States and colleges can also use FAFSA information when deciding who gets their own aid.

There isn’t a special nationwide FAFSA deadline for September 2026. Students can still complete the form during this month and throughout the 2026-27 award year.
Federal Student Aid explains: “Your college, career school, or trade school typically has the earliest of all the deadlines.” This means students shouldn’t look only at the federal deadline. A college may set a much earlier date for its own financial aid. State aid can have another deadline as well. Some state programs have limited funds, so applying earlier can give students a better chance of getting that money.
The federal deadline is June 30, 2027. The FAFSA form itself covers the period from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Federal Student Aid recommends applying as early as possible.

Missing a school or state priority deadline doesn’t always mean a student will get no aid. Some federal help may still be available as long as the FAFSA is submitted on time and the student meets the requirements.
