Obamacare Premiums May Double in 2026 Without Tax Subsidies

Obamacare health plans could become much more expensive in 2026 as pandemic-era tax subsidies expire, forcing many Americans to pay double or rethink coverage choices.

Obamacare Premiums in 2026: Millions of Americans who use health insurance under the Affordable Care Act may soon face much higher monthly costs. This can happen starting in 2026 if they stop qualifying for government tax subsidies. These subsidies helped many people afford health insurance during and after the pandemic.

Reports say that without these subsidies, insurance prices could jump very fast. CBS News shared that some people may see their monthly premiums more than double. For example, a 40-year-old person with a Silver plan may now pay about $400 each month with help. Without that help, the same plan could cost over $900 every month. Families who buy insurance without tax credits may also face similar sharp increases.

Why the Subsidy Loss is Important?

The federal government created these subsidies to limit how much of a person’s income goes toward health insurance. This made coverage cheaper for millions of people. If the subsidies expire in 2026, many Americans with modest incomes may need to rethink their choices. Some may move to cheaper plans with fewer benefits. Others may try to qualify for Medicaid if they meet the rules.

Experts also fear that fewer people will keep their insurance. John Holahan, a health policy expert at the Urban Institute, warned about this risk. He told CBS News, “We could see a drop in coverage because many middle-income Americans will find the unsubsidized premiums too high to afford, and that could lead to a new wave of uninsured.” If people drop coverage, they may avoid doctor visits or delay care, which can cause bigger health problems later.

What to Expect Before the 2026 Enrollment Period

Lawmakers have discussed extending the subsidies or creating new support plans, but they have not passed any final law yet. Until something changes, Americans should prepare for higher insurance costs. The next open enrollment period starts in November 2025 for coverage in 2026, so families have limited time to plan.

For people who still qualify for subsidies, ACA plans will continue to offer important financial help. These savings can make a big difference in monthly budgets.
