Social Security October 2 Payment: Some Social Security recipients in the US are set to receive their October 2026 payment on Friday, October 2. This payment comes earlier than the usual date because the regular payment date falls on a weekend.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has listed October 2 as a payment date for two groups. These include people who started getting Social Security before May 1997 and people who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Who gets Social Security on Friday, October 2?

  • Some long-term beneficiaries: People who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997 are included in this payment group.
  • People getting Social Security and SSI: Those who receive both benefits are also scheduled to get their Social Security payment on October 2. SSI is different from Social Security because it is based mainly on financial need. It also doesn’t depend on a person’s work history.

The October SSI payment is scheduled for Thursday, October 1. The average federal SSI payment was $738.73 in August 2026, according to the latest SSA monthly statistics.

Why is the October 2 Social Security payment early?

These two groups normally receive their Social Security payment on the third day of each month. But October 3, 2026 falls on a Saturday. Because of this, the payment is moved to Friday, October 2. The SSA’s official 2026 payment calendar confirms this schedule.

For most other Social Security recipients, the payment date depends on their date of birth.

  • Those born from the 1st to the 10th will get their payment on Wednesday, October 14.
  • People born from the 11th to the 20th are scheduled for Wednesday, October 21.
  • Those born from the 21st to the 31st will receive their payment on Wednesday, October 28

When a person receives benefits based on someone else’s work record, the SSA uses that person’s date of birth for the payment schedule.

How much are Social Security payments?

The latest SSA figures give these average monthly payments:

  • Retirement: $2,033.27
  • Disability: $1,498.94
  • Survivor: $1,635.70

These are average amounts, so the payment can be different for each beneficiary. The SSA reported 71.499 million Social Security beneficiaries in August 2026.

When will the 2027 COLA be announced?

The SSA has said that the next Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, will be announced in October 2026. The September 2026 CPI data, which is needed for the final calculation, is scheduled to be released on October 14.

Some experts have estimated that the 2027 COLA could be around 3.5%. However, the final percentage won’t be known until the official calculation is completed. The increase will apply to Social Security and SSI benefits beginning in January 2027.
