According to the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999, these labels are issued. Nonetheless, it was implemented on September 15, 2003. It is prudent to be familiar with the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag 2023. In the general knowledge section of numerous competitive examinations, the Geographical Indication Tag 2023 is frequently the subject of numerous queries. In this document, we will provide all the pertinent information regarding GI Tag in India, as well as the list of GI Tag in India for 2023.

Geographical Indication (GI) Tags 2023: About Geographical Indication

Geographical Indication is the abbreviation for GI identifier. Primarily, it is a designation or symbol given to products associated with a specific geographical location, such as a region, town, or country. Geographical Indication can also be described as a certificate issued for a product indicating that it possesses a particular quality or has a certain reputation due to its geographical origin.

Typically, GI labels are issued for agricultural products, wine and alcoholic beverages, foodstuff, handicrafts, and industrial commodities.

The issuance of a GI tag ensures that only registered and authorised manufacturers are permitted to use the renowned product name. A GI badge is issued in the name of Darjeeling Tea, for instance. Producers of Darjeeling Tea cannot use the term “Darjeeling” if the tea is not cultivated in their tea gardens or produced in accordance with the geographical indication’s code of practise.

Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala are the top five Indian states with the highest number of GI labels.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka possess the most geographical indication (GI) tags, followed by Kerala (35 GI tags), Uttar Pradesh (34 GI tags), and Maharashtra (31 GI tags).

Objectives of the GI Tag

The primary purpose of the Geographical Indication Tag is to prevent unauthorised use of a Registered Geographical Indication by other manufacturers/sellers. Numerous additional advantages of GI badges are listed below.

It provides legal protection for the manufacturer of one-of-a-kind products originating from a specific region of the country.

The GI label also assists customers in acquiring the highest quality products of their choosing.

The GI marking guarantees the item’s authenticity. If a manufacturer has a GI Tag, it indicates that the product they are producing is authentic.

It also improves and promotes the reputation of manufacturers of GI-marked products by increasing product demand on national and international markets.
