Abraham Lincoln Biography: 5 Unknown Facts
When Lincoln was only nine years old, his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, passed away at the age of 34 from tremetol (milk sickness).
Lincoln’s stepmother urged the young Abraham to learn to read, which he primarily did on his own because both of his parents were almost illiterate.
Lincoln got, at best, 18 months of formal schooling during his formative years; he eventually taught himself the law and passed the Illinois state bar exam.
The Lincoln family was evicted from their Kentucky home in 1817 due to a land dispute; they ended up “squatting” on a small plot of land in Indiana, which Lincoln’s father later bought.
They became engaged in 1840, split up after a year, reconnected during a social gathering, and got hitched in 1842.
