Adil Rashid Career

Adil Rashid significantly improved the tumultuous relationship between legspin and English cricket by becoming the nation’s dominant white-ball spinner in 2015 and a pivotal member of their World Cup-winning squad four years later. Rashid amassed more than 200 white-ball wickets for England over the subsequent six years, whereas no legspinner had taken more than five wickets for the team prior to his recall to the limited-overs setup in 2015.

His success in the limited-overs format was largely attributable to his variation, and his lethal googly in particular, so his Test debut against Pakistan in 2015 did not come as much of a surprise. Rashid amassed sixty wickets in nineteen Tests, but frequently labored for control, and a persistent shoulder injury prompted him to shift his attention back to the shorter formats following the 2019 Caribbean tour.

He became the third player of Asian descent to be born in Yorkshire to represent the county in 2006. His debut performance against Warwickshire at Scarborough, in which he took 6 for 67, felt like a turning point. In 2008, his 62 Championship wickets garnered him call-ups as a backup player for Test tours to India and the Caribbean.

He participated in all four of England’s World Twenty20 matches in his England début year of 2009. However, his tour to South Africa the following winter was a reprimand: his one over in the Twenty20 International series was dismissed for 25 runs, and his three overs in an ODI in Centurion were taken for 27.

Rashid’s subsequent years at Yorkshire were marred by inconsistent progress, but he became a more prolific run-scorer when he was in his mid-20s. Under the leadership of Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie, he flourished. Gillespie subsequently led him to the Big Bash with Adelaide Strikers, with whom he won titles in 2014 and 2015. He participated in the England squads that advanced to the 2016 World T20 final and the 2017 Champions Trophy semi-final, and he captured eleven wickets in the 2019 World Cup.

In 2015, he returned 0 for 163 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in his debut to Test cricket, but his 5 for 64 in the second innings illustrated why England had been so eager to convert him into a red-ball bowler. In 2016-17, he led the team in India in wicket-taking with 23, thirteen more than any other player. However, he averaged over 35 and allowed 3.70 runs per over to slip through.

A controversy emerged in 2018 when Ed Smith, a selector inclined towards unconventional thinking, selected Rashid for the home series against India in Test cricket months after he had signed a white-ball-only contract with Yorkshire. Prior to joining Moeen Ali and Jack Leach in a spin triumvirate for England’s 3-0 victory in Sri Lanka, he amassed ten wickets in the series. However, following an expensive Test in the Caribbean in early 2019, he was once again left out.

However, he remained arguably the most valuable member of England’s reconstituted white-ball squad, and in 2022, he added the T20 World Cup title to the 50-over championship he had won in 2019 despite a persistent shoulder injury that required constant monitoring. His performances in that Australian competition exemplified his worth: in his final 12 overs of the tournament, he amassed a total of 4 for 58 runs, including 2 for 22 in the championship match against Pakistan.
