Amy Lee Biography

Early Life

Born in Los Angeles, California on December 13, 1981, Amy Lynn Hartzler, also known by her stage name Amy Lee, was the daughter of radio host and television personality John Lee and Sara Cargill. She lost her brother Robby in 2018 and has two sisters, Carrie and Lori. They traveled through Florida, Illinois, Arkansas, and California. Since she was young, she has had a deep love for the piano and aspired to become a classical composer.

After meeting lead guitarist Ben Moody at a youth camp, Lee left Middle Tennessee State University’s music program to found Evanescence in 1995. The group performed live on local radio stations until limited editions of their two EPs, “Evanescence” and “Sound Asleep,” were released in 1998 and 1999. They later in 2002 signed a record deal with Wind-Up Records, featuring former band member David Hodges, and put out their debut album, “Fallen,” which became an international sensation after going seven times platinum.

Career

Amy has performed as a solo artist and with bands like Korn and Seether. Amy has also contributed to musical projects such as Walt Disney’s “Nightmare Revisited” (which she performed live at the Hollywood premiere) and Jay Leno’s “The Good Night Show” (2008). She also worked on the soundtrack for the 2003 film “Underworld.” She made an appearance in the music video for the song “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash in 2006.

During the band’s 2006 acoustic set, “Freak on Leash” was played live in the M.T.V. studios in New York City. She performed “Sally’s Song” in Walt Disney’s “Nightmare Revisited” in 2008. 2011 saw the release of her band’s self-titled album “Evanescence” in both Europe and the US. It continues to be the band’s most popular endeavor to date.

For the 2012 tribute album “We Walk The Line: A Celebration of the Music of Johnny Cash,” which pays homage to the legendary country music performer, Lee recorded the song “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” In addition, she made her feature film debut as a composer on the independent film “War Story” (2014), working with friend and fellow composer Dave Eggar.

Personal Life

Lee was romantically involved with Seether’s lead singer Shaun Morgan from 2003 to 2005. After they broke up due to his drug addiction, she wrote the song “Call Me When You’re Sober” about him. During a live music broadcast in 2007, Lee declared her engagement. Lee’s longtime friend and therapist Josh Hartzler made her a proposal, as she later disclosed on EvThreads.com. She claims that he served as the inspiration for the songs “Bring Me to Life” and “Good Enough.” The pair wed on May 6, 2007, and spent their honeymoon in the Bahamas. The couple’s first child, Jack Lion Hartzler, was born on July 24, 2014.
