Early Years

Anjum has always been a well-rounded athlete. She began playing cricket at an extremely young age. In addition to being a member of the Delhi State basketball team, she represented her high school and college in swimming, athletics, and basketball. Possibly the most influential factor was her family history. Nearly every member of Anjum’s family has been actively involved in athletics. There is no doubt where her affinity for athletics originates! Her cricket career began at school, where she competed at the state level.

Career

After beginning employment with Air India, Anjum Chopra represented the company in domestic matches. In 2012, she lead the Delhi squad to the National Championship. Under her direction, the women’s cricket team claimed its first national championship. The Air India team also won national and zonal tournaments in 2002 and 2003. In 2003, Air India’s crew was named “Best Team of the Year.”

Anjum began his international career at age 17. In 1995, she made her debut against New Zealand. She scored a century during India’s tour of England in 1999. Anjum quickly rose to become one of the top Indian batswomen. She was also a skilled bowler of medium speed. Her agility on the pitch also made her an exceptional fielder. So it is not surprising that she quickly became a premier Indian cricketer.

In 2000, she was appointed Vice-Captain of the Indian team. At the Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, she scored the most runs for India. She won the award for player of the match twice.

She was appointed captain of the Indian women’s team in 2002. Under her direction, the team received numerous accolades. Despite having seven rookies on its roster, the visiting England team was sent back empty-handed. In 2002, India won the test series in South Africa. In 2005, she led the team to the World Cup finals. She continued to represent her country in international cricket for four years. In 2009, Chopra hung up her boots.

Family History of Anju Chopra

Her father, Krishnan Bal Chopra, is a golfer, while her mother, Poonam Chopra, has won automobile rallies. Even her paternal grandfather, Ved Prakash Sahni, was a national athlete. Nirvan Chopra, the sibling of Anjum, is also a former state-level cricketer. Rohit Sahni, her maternal uncle, played cricket in high school and college. In fact, he was the college team captain.

She began training at the Sonnet Club under Tarak Sinha’s direction. He had a significant impact on Anjum’s career. In a number of interviews, Anjum has recalled her instructors.
